Lighter Later

Only few days left before the vote in UK parliament on 3rd Dec. Please ask your MP to support the lighter later campaign. I've blogged on this a few years ago, modern timezone for UK.

Wikipedia auto link article translations

Often I need to look up something in English, just to get to the Language translation column on the left and find the translated article in a different language for a friend or colleague.

I've noticed that all the articles for a particular topic in different languages, don't all share the same Language links to other versions. Most link to English, but the English version doesn't always link back. Take Guineafowl article as an example, the Chinese article 珠雞 links to English, but not the reverse (well it will after I manually fix!).

The problem is that articles are linked only by those who know both languages currently. Which leaves a gap between many language pairs.

Would be easy for wikipedians to run a check on articles linked to English articles, and check that the English article links back. If not linked, automatically adding a link. If there is a conflict, don't make the change, add the article to a report for manual consideration.

Apply the same check to all language articles, checking the pairs are linked.

Any inconsistency in the linking up will be detected by the power of the crowd after the changes are committed ;)

I've noticed there is the Simple English wikipedia now. That could have only been created with the power users have in their hands.

HTC Desire incorrect DPI

Noticed that my HTC Desire displays web pages smaller than they should be, and I've found the cause. The Android 2.1 update1 firmware is reporting that the DPI (Dots Per Inch) of the display is 96x96!

Whereas, the 2" x 3" display is 480x800 pixels, which means DPI is 240x266 !

Anyone know if this is going to be fixed in the 2.2 Android firmware update?

Would be handy if I could update via the "layout.css.dpi" value I've got in Firefox's about:config.

There's a nice online tool for checking browser dpi. See this post for lcd_density setting for rooted devices.
