Cold calling claim success

Interesting article over on BBC about a chap who successful claimed back his time and costs from a firm that kept cold calling him. I'm surprised the ICO isn't taking their responsibilities seriously and regulating directly though.

This week I received another txt spam about a PPI claim. No company info included. I wish ICO and Ofcom would enforce a rule that the first part of the message has to be the real companies name, address and Data Protection Officer - so we can make a complaint if needed.

[RESOLVED] Channel4 4oD working with Ubuntu GNU+Linux

Channel4 4oD online programme catchup service is not compatible with Ubuntu GNU+Linux by default.

A tip from Channel4 ViewerEnquiries tech support was to install package hal, which got it working ! already had Adobe Flash v11,2,202,238 installed.

sudo apt-get install hal

Channel4, can you publish this on your website if Linux is detected? Or get Flash player to work out of the box?

Government Gateway not shared

Why does the standard Government Gateway that should work across all UK sites, only work with HMRC? I needed to create a separate login for DirectGov! Seems a little silly.

Directgov DVLA rubbish passwords

Why does DirectGov's DVLA passwords have to be only letters and numbers? That only makes it simpler for fraudsters to guess, as less letters to attempt with. (I always use punctuation marks as well.)

Ubuntu and Windows need a versioned filesystem

Ever lost some changes in a file you were working on? You've got a document open, delete a paragraph, save, close the file.. but later you want to get that paragraph back! 40 years ago OS's stored each version of a file that was saved (VMS etc), and when opening it, the most up to date version was opened, however you could easily go back, and get the older version revision.

We all use tools like Subversion and other version control to store our files and documents, we just need our local PC filesystems to behave the same, each time you click save, it commits a new revision.  We can look back at the properties on a file and retrieve the old version if needed.

Discs are huge now, and processing power has increased, so no excuses not to support this :)
